Skin Quality & Previous Treatment Concerns

Ultrasound Assessment & Filler Dissolving Consultation in Melbourne

Dr Benyamin Mansoori provides doctor-led consultations in Southbank and Malvern for concerns following previous facial filler, including lumps, persistent swelling, suspected migration and asymmetry. Assessment begins with understanding your symptoms, treatment history and the changes that matter to you.

Ultrasound may help assess selected findings alongside a physical examination. It may not be indicated or available in every case, and cannot guarantee an explanation for every concern. A consultation does not mean that dissolving is necessary, suitable or obligatory, and no particular outcome can be guaranteed.

What Is Ultrasound Assessment of Previous Dermal Filler?

Ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to produce images of soft tissues. In selected circumstances, it may help assess the location, depth and distribution of some previous filler deposits, surrounding tissues, possible fluid collections or nodules, and anatomical structures such as blood vessels. It does not use ionising radiation.

The usefulness of a scan depends on the equipment, the operator’s experience, the material present and the area being examined. Findings must be interpreted with your medical and procedure history and a physical examination; a scan alone is not a diagnosis and cannot always identify the exact product used.

Previous filler concerns may relate to the material, a tissue reaction, normal anatomy or an unrelated medical condition. Understanding the likely cause is important before discussing any corrective procedure.

When Might an Ultrasound Assessment Be Considered?

A scan may be considered when it could answer a specific clinical question or change management. It is not a routine requirement for every person who has had filler. The following concerns warrant individual assessment rather than an assumption that filler must be removed.

Persistent or Unwanted Filler

If an area still appears fuller than expected or a previous result no longer suits your preferences, assessment considers the timing, product information and underlying tissues. Some materials can persist longer than anticipated, but an appearance change does not prove that filler is still present. Ultrasound may help clarify selected deposits where the findings would be useful.

Facial Asymmetry

Differences between the two sides of the face are common and may reflect natural anatomy, swelling, previous procedures or other conditions. Facial contouring and volume assessment considers the whole face rather than attributing every difference to filler. Ultrasound may assist when a suspected deposit or tissue change needs further evaluation; perfect symmetry cannot be promised.

Suspected Filler Migration

Migration describes filler appearing beyond its intended placement area. Fullness or a change near a previously treated area may raise this concern, but can also result from swelling, tissue changes or the original distribution of material. Examination and, when appropriate, imaging may help assess location; neither appearance nor a scan always establishes how or when a change occurred.

Lumps and Nodules

A lump may represent a filler deposit, inflammation, infection, scar tissue or an unrelated lesion. The timing, tenderness, skin changes and associated symptoms help guide assessment. Ultrasound may show selected deposits or collections, but additional investigation or specialist review may be needed. Treating every lump as unwanted filler risks overlooking another cause.

Persistent Swelling

Ongoing or recurrent swelling may have several causes, including tissue reactions, fluid retention, infection and unrelated medical problems. Assessment considers when swelling occurs and whether there is pain, redness or a change in general health. A skin-quality consultation may be relevant if associated skin inflammation or other skin concerns require evaluation; ultrasound does not explain every episode of swelling.

Concerns Around the Lips or Under-Eye Region

These areas have distinct anatomy and functional considerations. A lip consultation can assess shape, movement, lumps and swelling after previous procedures. An under-eye assessment considers eyelid tissues, puffiness, cheek support and possible non-filler causes. Ultrasound may be useful in selected cases, but delicate anatomy and symptoms near the eyes may require specialist referral instead of a corrective procedure.

What Can Ultrasound Show—and What Are Its Limitations?

Ultrasound may provide information about tissue layers, some material deposits, blood vessels and selected nodules or fluid collections. The quality and meaning of the images vary with depth, location, equipment and operator expertise. A normal or inconclusive scan does not exclude all filler, inflammation, infection or other causes of symptoms.

There is no guarantee of detecting every material or explaining all symptoms. Imaging appearances may overlap between products, and identifying an exact brand is rarely definitive from ultrasound alone. Original treatment records remain useful. Depending on the findings, other investigations, follow-up or referral may be more appropriate than relying on a scan.

What Is Filler Dissolving?

Certain hyaluronic-acid-based fillers can be affected by an enzyme-based treatment sometimes described as filler dissolving. This is a medical intervention, not a universal reversal process. Its effect depends on the material, location and clinical circumstances, and a complete or predictable change cannot be guaranteed.

Permanent fillers and many non-hyaluronic-acid materials cannot be dissolved in this way. The suitability of any prescription-only treatment is assessed and discussed privately during consultation. This page provides general education and does not promote or directly recommend a particular prescription product.

When Might Filler Dissolving Be Considered?

Dissolving may be discussed for selected unwanted hyaluronic-acid filler deposits, or certain concerns about asymmetry, excessive volume, contour changes or nodules, when examination and available information support that approach. Inflammatory or infected nodules may need different management. Not every issue requires dissolving, and adding further filler is not automatically appropriate either.

Options may include observation, investigation, a staged management plan, specialist referral or no intervention. Cosmetic consultation and facial assessment can place an isolated concern in the context of your overall anatomy and goals. You can take time to consider the options and are not obliged to proceed.

What Happens During Your Consultation?

  1. Previous procedure history and product details: discuss when and where filler was placed, the areas treated, any known product names, subsequent procedures and previous attempts at correction. Bring treatment records or photographs if available; you can still seek assessment if records are missing.
  2. General medical history and symptoms: review the onset and pattern of concerns, pain, redness, swelling, eye symptoms, relevant health conditions, medicines, allergies and previous adverse reactions. New or urgent symptoms take priority over cosmetic planning.
  3. Physical examination: assess the affected tissues, skin, contour, symmetry and relevant facial movement. Findings are considered alongside normal anatomical variation and possible causes unrelated to filler.
  4. Ultrasound or other investigations when appropriate: discuss whether imaging could answer a useful clinical question, its limitations and availability, and whether other investigations or specialist review would be more appropriate. A scan is not assumed to be required or available at the first visit.
  5. Management choices, informed consent and fees: discuss observation, appropriate correction, referral, dissolving where suitable or no treatment, including risks, alternatives, possible recovery and follow-up. The doctor consultation fee is $150; any investigation or procedure fees must be explained before proceeding. See Fees & Pricing for consultation information. No procedure or same-day treatment is guaranteed, and you may decline.

Potential Risks of Filler Dissolving

Filler dissolving is not risk-free. Possible adverse effects include pain, tenderness, bruising, swelling, infection and allergic reactions. Rare severe hypersensitivity reactions, including anaphylaxis, require emergency care. Relevant allergies and previous reactions must be discussed, but assessment cannot eliminate all risk.

Effects may be incomplete or uneven, and contour or appearance may change in an unwanted way. Adjacent hyaluronic-acid material may also be affected, so a precisely confined or predictable result cannot be promised. Further assessment or management may be needed; repeated intervention also carries risks.

Dissolving cannot guarantee restoration of your appearance before filler. Natural ageing, the original tissues, prior procedures and the underlying cause of symptoms may all influence the outcome. The specific risks, alternatives and uncertainties should be discussed before informed consent.

Can All Dermal Fillers Be Dissolved?

No. Enzyme-based dissolving applies to certain hyaluronic-acid fillers, not all injectable materials. Permanent and other non-hyaluronic-acid fillers may need a different approach, and removing them can be complex or inappropriate. Even with a known hyaluronic-acid product, the response and extent of change vary.

Treatment records and assessment may help identify the material, but uncertainty sometimes remains. An ultrasound appearance alone should not be treated as definitive product identification. Unknown material is a reason for careful evaluation and, where needed, specialist advice rather than a trial of treatment without a considered plan.

When Is Urgent Medical Attention Needed?

Sudden visual disturbance or loss of vision, severe eye pain or acute neurological symptoms after filler require emergency assessment. Call 000 or seek emergency medical care immediately. Do not wait for a routine consultation, an ultrasound appointment or a reply from a clinic.

Severe or increasing pain, blanching, or dusky or unusual skin discolouration after filler may indicate impaired blood supply or tissue injury and require urgent medical assessment. Spreading redness, warmth, worsening swelling, fever or other signs of infection also need prompt assessment; seek emergency care if you are rapidly worsening or seriously unwell.

Breathing difficulty, throat or tongue swelling, faintness or collapse after any treatment may indicate a severe allergic reaction. Call 000 immediately. This page cannot assess symptoms or rule out a complication.

When Might Specialist Referral Be Appropriate?

Referral may be appropriate for suspected infection, a difficult or persistent nodule, unknown or permanent filler, ongoing symptoms despite previous management, or concerns involving complex anatomy. A dermatologist, plastic surgeon, ophthalmologist or another suitable specialist may provide further investigation or management according to the clinical issue. These are possible referral specialties, not descriptions of Dr Ben’s professional role.

Vascular, neurological or acute eye concerns may require immediate hospital assessment rather than an elective referral. Where a concern is not urgent, the reason for referral and the limits of management in the consultation setting should be explained. A cosmetic procedure is not always the safest or most appropriate next step.

Arrange an Ultrasound & Previous Filler Assessment

A consultation with Dr Benyamin Mansoori can help evaluate previous filler concerns and discuss appropriate next steps. Bring available procedure records, your medicine list and details of any reactions or symptoms. Ultrasound or dissolving may not be needed, suitable or available, and neither a specific procedure nor a result can be guaranteed.

This information is general medical education, not a diagnosis or individual treatment advice. Decisions require examination, consideration of alternatives and informed consent. You are under no obligation to proceed with treatment. Urgent symptoms must be assessed promptly rather than deferred to a booked consultation.

Common questions

Can ultrasound detect filler placed many years ago?
It may detect some persistent filler deposits, including material placed years earlier, but not every material or deposit is visible. Findings depend on the area, equipment and operator and must be considered with your history and examination.
Can ultrasound identify the exact filler used?
Not reliably in every case. Some imaging features may suggest a material type, but the exact brand is rarely definitive from a scan alone. Original product and procedure records are helpful.
What is filler migration?
Migration describes filler appearing beyond its intended placement area. Changes in fullness can also reflect swelling, tissue changes or the original placement, so examination is needed before attributing a concern to migration.
Can all dermal fillers be dissolved?
No. Enzyme-based dissolving can affect certain hyaluronic-acid fillers, but not permanent fillers or many other materials. Suitability and the likely response require individual assessment.
Does every filler lump need dissolving?
No. Lumps can have different causes, including inflammation, infection, scar tissue or an unrelated lesion. Observation, investigation, other management or referral may be more appropriate than dissolving.
Is ultrasound required before every filler-dissolving procedure?
No. It may be useful for a specific clinical question, but is not necessary or available in every case. History and examination guide whether imaging or another investigation would help.
Can previous lip or under-eye filler be assessed?
Yes, concerns in these areas can be discussed and examined. Ultrasound may assist selected cases, but delicate anatomy, eye symptoms or complex findings may require specialist referral. Assessment does not imply dissolving is suitable.
Is filler dissolving safe?
It is not risk-free. Risks include pain, bruising, swelling, infection, incomplete effects, unwanted appearance changes and allergic reactions, including rare severe hypersensitivity. Individual risks and alternatives must be discussed before consent.
Will dissolving restore my original appearance?
That cannot be guaranteed. Ageing, natural anatomy, previous procedures and tissue changes can affect appearance. Dissolving may be incomplete or uneven and may affect adjacent hyaluronic-acid material.
Can assessment and dissolving take place at the same visit?
Same-visit treatment is not assumed or guaranteed. Examination, product information, investigations, suitability, informed consent, applicable requirements and service availability determine whether another appointment or referral is needed.
What if I do not know which filler was originally used?
You can still seek assessment. Bring any records you have and, where possible, request product details from the original provider. Imaging may help but cannot always identify the material; uncertainty may require further investigation or specialist advice.
