Lip Consultation & Assessment in Melbourne
Dr Benyamin Mansoori provides individualised, doctor-led lip consultations in Southbank and Malvern, Melbourne. Lips are important for expression, speech and facial proportions. Their shape is influenced by anatomy, genes, age and dental support.
Patients may ask about symmetry, shape, border definition, volume changes or previous cosmetic procedures. An appointment is a medical assessment: it does not imply that treatment is necessary or suitable, or that any result can be guaranteed.

What Is a Lip Consultation?
A lip consultation assesses the lips and their relationship to the rest of the face, both at rest and during movement. It provides an opportunity to discuss your concerns, understand the examination findings and consider alternatives, including no intervention.
A cosmetic consultation and facial assessment may provide a broader context when your concerns extend beyond the lips. Assessment does not automatically lead to a procedure or establish treatment suitability.
What Is Assessed During a Lip Consultation?
Assessment considers your individual anatomy and concerns rather than a single preferred lip shape or a one-size-fits-all standard. Areas that may be discussed include:
- Lip shape and proportions: the relationship between the upper and lower lips and their place within your facial proportions, without prescribing a standard ratio or ideal appearance.
- Normal asymmetry: differences between sides are common. Dental factors, facial movement and previous procedures may contribute; perfect symmetry cannot be guaranteed.
- Volume and age-related tissue changes: changes in fullness, tissue support and elasticity may affect appearance, but ageing is not the only possible cause.
- Lip border and surrounding skin: border definition, texture and fine lines may be relevant. A skin-quality consultation can explore surrounding skin concerns where appropriate.
- Projection and facial profile: the relationship between the lips, chin and nose may be considered as part of facial contouring and volume assessment, rather than assessing the lips in isolation.
- Previous lip treatments: procedure details and any lumps, swelling, pain or persistent asymmetry need consideration before further treatment is discussed.
If you also have concerns about the lower eyelids or adjoining facial areas, an under-eye assessment can address those separately in the context of the whole face. It is not a required part of a lip consultation.
What Happens During Your Consultation?
The consultation supports an informed decision and generally includes five stages:
- Concerns and goals: discuss what you have noticed, your preferences and what you hope to understand or change.
- Medical and treatment history: review relevant health conditions, medicines, allergies and previous procedures, including any complications and available treatment records.
- Physical examination: assess the lips, surrounding tissues and facial proportions at rest and during movement.
- Options and alternatives: discuss conservative care, clinical options if appropriate, referral or no treatment. A procedure is not automatically recommended.
- Risks, costs and informed consent: discuss material risks, recovery, follow-up and fees before any decision. There is no obligation to proceed, and you can take time to consider the information.
See Fees & Pricing for consultation information. Any treatment or procedure fees are provided after individual assessment and explained before proceeding.
Potential Risks and Complications
Cosmetic lip procedures are not risk-free. Depending on the procedure, potential complications include swelling, bruising, tenderness, infection, allergic or inflammatory reactions, lumps, scarring, asymmetry, an unsatisfactory result, and vascular or tissue injury.
Certain injectable procedures may, in rare cases, cause vascular occlusion (a blocked blood vessel) and tissue necrosis (tissue death). Exceptional cases of visual injury or blindness have also been reported. These serious risks require balanced, patient-specific counselling when a relevant procedure is being considered.
Suitability depends on your medical history, examination findings, previous procedures and the proposed approach. Risks, recovery and limitations vary, and correction or reversal is not always possible. No procedure can guarantee a particular shape, perfect symmetry or a satisfactory outcome. This page does not recommend a prescription medicine or establish eligibility for treatment.
Previous Cosmetic Lip Procedures
Share any available details of previous lip procedures, including dates, products or techniques used, the treating clinician and any complications. Previous filler concerns such as persistent swelling, lumps, pain or asymmetry require clinical assessment before considering further procedures.
Ultrasound assessment and filler dissolving may be discussed where clinically indicated. Ultrasound assessment may help clarify previous treatment findings if indicated and available, but it has limitations and is not required for every patient. Dissolving is not automatically suitable or available, and any intervention requires its own assessment, risk discussion and informed consent.
Severe new pain, blanching or unusual skin discolouration after a recent injection requires urgent medical assessment. New visual disturbance requires emergency assessment. Do not wait for a routine cosmetic consultation or an online response if these symptoms occur.
A Personalised Approach to Lip Assessment
Assessment respects your natural anatomy, facial proportions, personal preferences and medical and treatment history. There is no single ideal lip shape and no requirement to change a normal feature.
You can discuss the features you want to preserve, ask questions and consider the limitations of any option. Consultation should not create pressure to undergo a procedure; deferring a decision or choosing no treatment is valid.

Arrange a Lip Consultation
A lip consultation with Dr Ben is an opportunity for personalised evaluation of your concerns, anatomy and previous procedures. It does not guarantee a result or confirm that any procedure is necessary, suitable or available.
You can consider the findings, risks and alternatives before deciding on any next step. Booking a consultation does not obligate you to have treatment.
Common questions
- Can a lip consultation help with uneven lips?
- A consultation can assess asymmetry and possible contributors, including anatomy, movement, dental factors and previous procedures. Some asymmetry is normal. Assessment does not mean that treatment is needed or that perfect symmetry can be achieved.
- Can I discuss lip volume and shape during the same appointment?
- Yes. Volume, shape, proportions and related concerns can be discussed together. Examination findings and your history guide any recommendations; discussing several concerns does not mean that a procedure is appropriate or that every concern can be addressed at one visit.
- Are lip changes always caused by ageing?
- No. Genes, natural anatomy, dental support, facial movement, previous procedures and other tissue or health changes can influence lip appearance. Age-related changes may contribute, but the cause of a particular change needs individual assessment.
- What if I have previously undergone lip treatment?
- Tell Dr Ben about previous procedures and share available records, dates, products or techniques used and any complications. Persistent swelling, lumps, pain or asymmetry need assessment. Severe new pain or unusual skin colour changes after a recent injection require urgent medical assessment; new visual disturbance requires emergency assessment.
- Are cosmetic lip procedures risk-free?
- No. Risks vary by procedure and include swelling, bruising, infection, inflammatory reactions, lumps, scarring and asymmetry. Certain injectable procedures can rarely cause vascular occlusion and tissue necrosis, with exceptional visual injury or blindness. Relevant risks and suitability must be discussed individually before consent.
- Can treatment create a particular lip shape?
- A particular lip shape cannot be promised. Your anatomy, tissue characteristics, previous procedures, healing and the limitations of the proposed approach affect what may be possible. Results may differ from expectations, and correction or reversal is not always possible.
- Can I receive treatment at my first consultation?
- Treatment at the first consultation should not be assumed. It depends on assessment, suitability, informed consent and applicable clinical and regulatory requirements. Further assessment, time to consider your options or a separate appointment may be necessary; a procedure may not be recommended.
- Do I have to proceed with treatment?
- No. A consultation is an opportunity for assessment and information, not a commitment to a procedure. You can ask questions, consider alternatives, defer your decision or choose not to have treatment without pressure.
