Acne & Acne Scars

Acne can affect teenagers and adults and may lead to persistent redness, pigmentation or scarring.

Assessment of both active acne and acne scars helps guide treatment according to the type, severity and underlying contributing factors.

Acne Assessment

The consultation may consider:

  • Blackheads and whiteheads
  • Inflammatory acne
  • Hormonal pattern
  • Distribution of breakouts
  • Skin sensitivity
  • Previous treatment
  • Medications
  • Skincare routine
  • Lifestyle factors

Different Types of Acne Scars

Acne can leave different types of scarring, including:

  • Rolling scars
  • Boxcar scars
  • Ice-pick scars
  • Post-inflammatory pigmentation
  • Persistent redness

Different scar types may require different treatment approaches.

Treatment Planning

Depending on the clinical findings, management may include:

  • Medical acne treatment
  • Prescription or non-prescription skincare
  • Treatment of pigmentation or redness
  • Scar-directed procedures
  • Collagen-stimulating treatments
  • Skin rejuvenation
  • Referral where appropriate

Active acne may need to be controlled before certain scar treatments are considered. Scar improvement varies and complete removal cannot be guaranteed.

Assessment in person is the only way to work out what is causing a skin concern and what can reasonably be done about it. Fees are explained before anything is arranged.
